Cast iron
Cast iron gutters cost €2,100 to €7,500 to replace or restore on a typical semi, or €75 to €160 a metre. On a protected structure, like-for-like repair is the rule, and the Built Heritage Investment Scheme can help with the cost.
Free, no obligation. One local company prices it, not five.

Restore or replace
Cast iron rusts from the inside where water sits, and joints fail where the old putty or bolts give way. A sound run can be taken down, cleaned, primed, rejointed and painted. Cracked lengths are replaced with new cast iron in the same profile, ogee and half round being the common ones.
Protected structures
On a protected structure or in an architectural conservation area, swapping cast iron for uPVC can need permission, because it changes the character of the building. The Built Heritage Investment Scheme, run each year through the councils, funds repairs to historic buildings, and rainwater goods are among the works it covers. Ask your council's conservation officer.
Upkeep
Cast iron lasts a century or more if it's kept painted and clear. Repaint every few years, and clear leaves each autumn so water never sits in the run.
