Profiles
Half round is the traditional Irish gutter; square line carries more water for the same width; ogee has a moulded front that suits period and modern houses; deep flow is a bigger half round for large roofs and wet counties. In uPVC they all cost about the same to fit.

The four
Pick the shape for the look you want, then check it carries the water. On a big roof in a wet county, go to square or deep flow, or add a downpipe.
Which carries most
A square or ogee gutter carries more than a half round of the same width because its sides are steeper. Deep flow carries more again. The other half of capacity is the outlets: a run with an outlet at each end, or one in the middle, drains far faster than one outlet at the far end.
Matching
Round downpipes go with half round and deep flow, square with square line and usually with ogee. Every profile has its own brackets, unions, outlets and stop ends, so a repair needs the same make and shape.
