By region

Does it cost more in some counties?

The house sets the price more than the county: metres of gutter, height, downpipes and what's behind the old gutter. Across Munster, guttering typically runs €50 to €90 a metre installed. Around Dublin, uPVC gutters and downpipes on a semi usually come to €600 to €1,500 and seamless aluminium to €1,200 to €2,500.

A bungalow's gutter can be a weekend job for someone handy. Anything above the first floor needs a tower or scaffold, and the fall to the outlets has to be right, which is why most people pay a company.

What moves the price

Five things that change it

  • Metres. A terrace has about 15 m of gutter, a semi about 20 m, a detached house 40 m or more.
  • Material. uPVC is the base price, aluminium about double, cast iron the most.
  • Downpipes. Each new downpipe adds to the job; a long or awkward one more.
  • Height and access. Two storeys or a conservatory underneath can mean a tower or scaffold.
  • The fascia. If the board behind is rotten, the new gutter has nothing to hold on to. See fasciasandsoffits.ie.

VAT

Ask if VAT is in

Repair and maintenance of a house is at 13.5% VAT. Plenty of quotes are "plus VAT": on €1,500 that's €202.50. Ask for the written price to state it.
