Why uPVC

Light, cheap, no painting

uPVC doesn't rust or need painting, and a length is light enough for one person to fit from a ladder. Its weak points are the rubber seals at the joints, which harden over 20 years or so, and sunlight, which makes cheap plastic brittle and faded. When joints start dripping all along a run, it's time to replace rather than reseal.

Profiles and colours

Half round, square, ogee, deep flow

All four come in uPVC. Black and white are the standard colours, anthracite grey is the one most people ask for now, and brown suits older houses. Pick the downpipes to match: round with half round, square with square line. Gutter profiles compares them.

Shed guttering

Small runs, sheds and garages

A shed needs a small uPVC gutter, one downpipe and somewhere for the water to go: a water butt or a soakaway, never just onto the base. The parts cost a few euro a metre; fitting is usually under an hour.

FAQ

Questions we get asked

How long does uPVC guttering last?

Commonly 20 years or more. The seals at the joints go first; the gutter itself can last longer in shade.

Is uPVC or aluminium better?

Aluminium lasts longer and seamless runs have no joints to leak, but costs about double: €1,200 to €3,400 on a semi against €600 to €1,900 for uPVC.

Can I paint uPVC gutters?

It's not meant to be painted. Pick the colour at the start.
